Self Assessment Tax Returns For The Self Employed

The Self Assessment Tax Return is being phased out over the coming years. Starting from April 2026, if you are Self-Employed and/or a Landlord with a gross income of over £50,000, you will need to register for the new system Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Under the new system you will be required to record income and expenses and file tax returns on a quarterly basis. Read Making Tax Digital for guidance.

You will need to register with HMRC as soon as you become self-employed, whether that is trading as a Sole Trader, in Partnership or as a Limited Company.

Whether you work in your business as a Sole Trader, in Partnership or as a Limited Company, you have a responsibility and legal requirement to complete a self-assessment Tax Return at the end of every tax year. Your self-assessment Tax Return is a self declaration of your income from all sources for the previous tax year. It also informs HMRC of the amount of tax you owe or have paid for that particular year.

If a self-assessment Tax Return is filed after 31st January in any year, you may receive a penalty charge. Please see Self-assessment Tax Return Service FAQs for more information.

If you are about to become self-employed, as part of our service we can help you with the registration process. Please refer to Self Assessment Tax Returns Service FAQs below for more info.

Any tax that is due on the 31st January and left unpaid will incur interest charges on a daily basis.

A surcharge and further penalties may also be added too as time goes on.

If a Partnership tax return is filed late, an immediate £200 fine is imposed and a further £100 fine for each individual partner.
